Interview

When did you come up with the idea of filming the 1954 World Cup final in
Lego?

We had the idea of "Die Helden von Bern" in spring 2002 after we had found an audio tape with the original german commentary from the world cup final 1954 in Switzerland.

Did you shoot the scenes with Herbert Zimmermann's comments in mind?

Yes. Of course we had his comments in mind. Till we shot the scenes we had never seen video sequences of that game before, but we found some pictures in the internet. The verbal descriptions of Herbert Zimmermann was all we had in order to reconstruct the scenes of the original game.

Many books have been written and films have been made about the 1954 World
Cup final. Where do you think "Die Helden von Bern" differs from all of
them?

The most fundamental difference is that our interpretation of this historical and  important game is enriched with a sense of humour that is caused by the use of LEGO-figures. Probably it's the first version of the game that arouses interest not only to adults but also to the children who had never heard about this game before. Though we kept the course of the real game, "Die Helden von Bern" represents an alternative way to examine this historical event.

After "Die Helden von Bern", you produced "Helden'06". Where did the
initiative come from?

After the unexpected success of “Die Helden von Bern” the idea came up to produce another LEGO Football film. With the upcoming World Cup in Germany the chances of another succes were big. So we decided make the little yellow men play the final of the WC. The story is our version of the WC Final 2006 in Berlin. And for we don’t know which team will face the Germans in the final, we decided to let them play versus an All-Star Team with the elite of world football such as Ronaldinho, Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham, ...
